PRIME India & Nepal launch in Bhopal

Dr. Vikram Patel, Professor of International Mental Health & Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow in Clinical Science, Centre for Global Mental Health, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, UK and Research director of PRIME gave an introduction to the project and presented the background and vision of the project.

The Department of Health, Madhya Pradesh, took the lead in hosting this project launch ceremony followed by a meeting at Directorate of Health services, Satpura Bhawan, where Dr. A.N.Mittal, Director, Public Health, welcomed all the delegates from country and abroad. He expressed department’s commitment to strengthen the mental health program through PRIME. M.P. Dr. Kewal Thassu, Joint Director, NCD briefed the participants regarding existing situation in the state. He informed the group of the two major targets set by him for this project in the initial phase: clear road maps for improving mental health and capacity of primary health care staff in the State

Dr. Rahul Shidhaye, Lecturer, IIPH Hyderabad, and Principal Investigator for the project gave a detailed presentation about the Inception phase of PRIME and the research activities to be undertaken.

The Nepalese country team presented on mental health and mental health services in Nepal as well as ways to improve the effectiveness of mental health services.

The PRIME Project Launch is seen as a first step towards strengthening mental health service by government and civil societies.
